Labs, Locations, and Hours
We routinely request that you have bloodwork and labs drawn to evaluate and monitor your health. The tests and frequency of testing all depend on your specific medical conditions and health. We have a Labcorp draw station within our office (Mon-Fri 8a - 4p but closed over lunch from 12 - 1 and holidays).
First Visit: At your first visit we will give you a lab slip to obtain labs in our office (we have a Labcorp draw station in our office). Some tests require that you are fasting (nothing to eat or drink besides water from midnight the night before), and in that case we will give you a lab slip to get drawn fasting (in our office or elsewhere) when you can.
Follow up Visits: If we anticipate you will need labs for your next follow up visit, we will give you a lab slip to have labs drawn about 1 week prior to your next visit. This allows time for the lab to process and forward your lab results to us prior to your upcoming visit.
While getting labs drawn prior to the next visit is preferred, it is not required (and if you do not get your labs drawn you do not need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, as we can draw them in our office on the day of your appointment)
Why does it help to get labs drawn prior to your follow up visit? The benefits of drawing your labs prior to your follow up appointment are:
- We can ensure we received your lab results and communicate them to you,
- We can give you a copy of the results on the spot,
- By knowing your results in advance, we can focus our discussions on what needs the most attention (i.e. if something is not at goal and needs specific adjustment and discussion)
- We can directly answer any of your questions about your test results (instead of playing phone tag later),
- We can directly advise you on medication adjustments, all risks and benefits, any issues, concerns, or hesitations about the medications, and other alternatives.
- We can ensure that you get the correct prescriptions (as well as the specific quantities that you prefer, i.e. monthly vs. 90 day mail orders)
Specific Lab companies: We have a Labcorp draw station within our office (Monday - Friday from 8am - 4pm but closed over lunch between 12 noon - 1pm and and closed on any holidays that our office is closed). We prefer (but do not require) that you have your labs drawn for Labcorp only because we have an electronic data interface with Labcorp directly into our computer system. With the labslip we print, you can have your labs drawn at any Labcorp location in the Central Virginia area.
Every insurance plan (including Medicare) can use Labcorp with the exception of Aetna (requires Quest lab). Thus if you have Aetna insurance, the lab in our office will not draw labs for Quest and you will need to have your labs drawn at one of those locations.
